For many people, the Sunset Strip is where Los Angeles begins and ends. This three-hour tour will explore the entertaining history of modern Los Angeles via Route 66. We will visit historical monuments including Griffith Observatory, the Hollyhock House and Los Angeles Temple.

Sunset Blvd - Historic Route 66 in Echo Park. A local eating institution since 1949. This classic California diner serves breakfast, lunch and coffee, with vegan options and homemade pies. It's decor is an eclectic mix of modern 50s diner.

(b. 1890, Ontario, Canada – d. 1944, Oakland, CA) Aimee McPherson was a Canadian-American Pentecostal evangelist and builder of Angeles Temple. The megachurch and national landmark was the largest construction in 1935 North America. A media celebrity, “Sister Aimee” pioneered modern radio and became the most publicized Christian evangelist of her time, until her alleged kidnapping altered the course of her career….

Barnsdall Art Park in Los Feliz Frank Lloyd Wright’s first Los Angeles project was built between 1919 and 1921. It represents his earliest efforts to develop a regionally appropriate style of architecture for Southern California, which he referred to as California Romanza. A musical term meaning “freedom to make one’s own form.”

(b. 1889, London, England – d. 1977, Switzerland) Chaplin directing and acting in a comedy tentatively titled Production No. 5., April 22, 1935. Chaplin’s film career began in 1913 with Keystone Studios in Edendale (Silverlake, Echo Park and Los Feliz). It is here, before the invention of Hollywood, where Los Angeles’ film industry began, and where Charlie Chaplin began writing and directing the films in which he starred.



Historical National Monument in Angeleno Heights. This Victorian-era home is a notable example by the architects Joseph and Samuel Newsom. Built in 1889 for dairyman Charles Sessions, it features complex textures and shapes with its shingle-and-clapboard exterior, richly ornamented Moorish spindle work, Greek Revival pediment, Queen Anne lattice work, art-glass windows and wooden scrolls.

We begin this tour at "The Brite Spot," a classic 1950s diner on Sunset Boulevard (Route 66). From there we will visit the Queen of the Angeles in Echo Park and drive along the strip with a detour "roller coaster ride" down Baxter Street. Continuing down the Boulevard we will visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House in the Barnsdall Art Park. Stops and drive-bys along the tour include other cultural landmarks like Angelino Heights, Frank Lloyd Wright's The Ennis House, Walt Disneys Snow White Cottages, The Black Cat and Richard Neutra's VDL Studio/Residence. The tour ends at the Griffith Observatory with a view of the Los Angeles Basin, including the Pacific Ocean and the Hollywood Sign.
